Office notebooks – working at home and in the office: today we will explain what features a good business notebook must have. Starting with the screen size, followed by hard drives, performance, and available ports. The reason is that office workers get more mobile over time. According to IDC estimates, approximately 37% of all office employees work on vocational projects on the move. For that, they need a notebook, one that is powerful, portable, and robust at the same time.

Notebook, Ultrabook, or Netbook – what kind of laptop fits the office and office at home?

Many modern laptops are suitable for working from home and in the office and even can be as powerful as a desktop computer. We differentiate between:

  • Notebooks
  • Ultrabooks
  • And Netbooks

Nowadays, the classic Notebook has sufficient storage and high performance for simple office work. It is equally suitable for the use in the office as well as for at home. But anybody who needs to store many data and uses complex programs, better picks an Ultrabook. The Netbook is the perfect addition when on the move because it fits into every bag thanks to its light weight and small size.

Tip: check before buying if the indicated weight includes the battery. The battery can be hundreds of grams heavy and so be the decisive factor for Notebooks used on the go.

Laptop for office and working from home: what to pay attention to

What does a good laptop need for working from home and the office? The answer to that is not that easy. Because a good laptop is not only extremely powerful but does also perfectly suit the case of application desired.

The following criteria are important when looking for a good laptop for working from home or the office:

Battery life

The battery of a laptop works from two to six and a half hours on average. Somebody who is on the move for longer, needs one with a more powerful battery.

Reviews provide insight into the actual time of a business laptop’s battery which often differs widely from the performance pledged. Also, an eventual memory effect has to be taken into consideration.

That’s why you should pay attention to the adjustment of the laptop’s battery life to your personal field of work. If you travel a lot and work on the move quite often, the investment in a more expensive one with a long battery life will be worth it.

A laptop for the office with a very good battery life is the Lenovo Thinkpad. It is also available here as a low priced, completely overhauled version*.

Performance

If the laptop while working from home is likely used for video editing or costly programs, it must have a powerful processor and a good graphics card.

As well important are features like the memory and storage. When wanting to work without disruptions, we recommend minimum 16 GB RAM size because modern programs often require a lot of that.

Modern business laptops got fast processors with graphics cards integrated which support browsing with several tabs and using common office programs. Most powerful and best processors are for example the i5, i7 and i9 Intel series.

  • Besonderheiten: nur 1.5kg, großer 8h Akku (spielt z.B. 8h ein youtube-Video ab) 8 GB DDR4 RAM, HD Webcam, HDMI, Kopfhöreranschluss, Mikrofon, USB 3.0

Hard drives

We recommend using an SSD for a Notebook. Although they are definitely more expensive, they have two essential advantages over mechanical hard disks:

  • SSD are more compact and don’t have mechanical elements inside them. Therefore, they are less vulnerable to knocks and vibrations than conventional hard disks.
  • SSD have significant higher write and read speed than conventional hard disks. The Notebook can be in total running order within a few seconds.

Office workers who travel a lot, best consider getting a model that has an integrated SSD to get work done reliable when on the move.

Case

Someone who is still on the move quite often, besides working from home, surely is glad if its laptop has a shockproof casing and comes with the compatible laptop bag. The laptop’s durability also depends on the case’s quality and its sensitivity towards knocks. Metal cases provide better safety than plastic housing.

Which screen size is necessary?

People who use their laptop for office work and while working from home, need a screen with an appropriate screen diagonal. The smallest models start at 8″ and are perfect for occasionally working on the move. If the device has to be transportable, the optimal size is between 10 and 15″. The screen is big enough, the device not too bulky and can be carried easily too.

14 inches equals about 35,5cm – big enough to use Office applications comfortably.

Bigger exemplars are required if video presentations have to be created or complex charts have to be made. In this case, exemplars from 17″ on make sense. Screens this size are only common for using in the office because with increasing screen diagonal, the weight rises too.

Summary: screen sizes for Notebooks

  • 10″ – mostly for Netbooks
  • 13,3″ – mostly for Netbooks
  • 14″ – small Notebooks
  • 15,6″ – standard size of Notebooks
  • 17,3″ – Ultrabooks

Screen and resolution

Displaygrößen Notebook: Beim Home Office und Büro-Laptop sollte neben der Displaygröße auch auf ein entspiegeltes Display geachtet werden

Notebook’s screen sizes: Notebooks do have different screen sizes. Besides the screen size, also important for office laptops is an anti-glare display! Picture: puhhha / fotolia.com

Every office employee does 12.000 to 33.000 movements with the head and eyes while working for eight hours. And even more if mainly sitting in front of the PC or laptop. In order for the eyes still staying healthy, the laptop has to have a high-quality screen with a good resolution.

Until a few years ago, most laptops had a resolution of 1024×768 pixels. But for latest programs this is not sufficient anymore. Anybody who wants to use Word and Co. comfortably, chooses a laptop with a resolution of minimum 1280×768 pixels.

Summary: screen resolution for Notebooks

  • 800 × 600
  • 1024 × 768
  • 1280 × 1024
  • 1600 × 1200
  • 1920 × 1280

Optimally the device is tested before at the shop. There you can determine at first glance if the resolution is sufficient and for example, if fonts are displayed adequately sharp.

The display’s brightness should be minimum 180cd/m2 (Candela per square meter). Often, parameters like these cannot be found on the product sheet or the packaging. Therefore, it is necessary to inquire the manufacturer or consult common forums in case of doubt.

Matte or glossy screen?

If the notebook is used outside or at a workplace exposed to direct sunlight, the screen must be anti-glare. Glossy screens, mostly made of glare panels, do provide high contrasts but are only suitable for working in darkened rooms. Anybody who wants to use the device for the presentation of image or film projects, has to go with the glossy version. For every other purpose, the matte screen is the more appropriate choice.

The evolution of volume

The fan and disc drive cause noise which often is perceived as disturbing. Especially low-priced Notebooks often got no smooth operating fan. So principally choose a model as quiet as possible. By trying out, you will quickly see which laptop fits your personal requirements. Since noise in a shop can be not determined exactly, we recommend having a look at well-known test magazines. But bear in mind that the most powerful a laptop, the more waste heat emerges. Therefore, most powerful laptops are always louder than one with a lower power.

Keyword

The Notebook’s keyboard has to be resistant to many keystrokes every day. The more important are high-quality keys which are not that loud and easy in pressing. Tip: the space bar gives some indication of the keyboard’s quality. If it cracks or tilts while pressing, the other keys don’t have a good quality neither.

Furthermore, the keys have to be placed in the usual positions. If you use shortcuts regularly, make sure that the End key, F keys, Windows logo key or Mac key and Co. are in the correct position. If required, there also can be additional keys for a smart volume control or brightness adjustment provided. Optimally, the keyboard is illuminated in case of overtime for a comfortable usage without typo.

Touchpad

Almost every business laptop has a touchpad. The rectangular field must be precise and have a vertical field for scrolling to be easy. If you’re using a mouse or change from one to the other option regularly, the touchpad should be able to be deactivated by pressing a button. Otherwise, there can be undesired activities happening by touching accidentally.

Ports

Several USB (3.0) ports go as a standard feature of every laptop. With them, external devices and storage medias can be connected to. Ideally, there are several USB ports for connecting a mouse, the keyboard, printer, and scanner at the same time. If necessary, the slot can be split by an active USB hub.

Optionally there should be a slot for SD cards. Also ports for a headphone or headset are required if applications for audio have to be used. The laptop can easily be connected to the intranet by a LAN port. Convenient as well is an integrated WIFI card.

There are also notebooks which can be transformed into a desktop PC within seconds with the assistance of a docking station. For example, many Lenovo notebooks and the Lenono OneLink serve this option.

The laptop brand must provide the following services

Service Laptop Home-Office und Büro

Business laptops benefit from additional services, such as local repair and the replacement service.

A business laptop is a big investment which has to pay off. Therefore, services like a long guarantee and a free, reachable customer service should be available.

The device should be provided with current drivers and updates which optimally can be obtained directly through the brand’s website. If the device is in daily use, there should be the option for a local repair service as well. If the device is damaged, the manufacturer has to assume the repair or fund the exchange of the device if necessary. What to bear in mind is that the local repair is often accompanied by additional charges per month.
